What Does a Woolmark Licence Mean?

The Woolmark logo often appears in wool carpet quotations and product documents. Although it is sometimes read as a general statement of quality, the licence has a specific meaning and scope. This guide explains what it verifies, which products it applies to and what it does not cover.

What is Woolmark?

Woolmark is an international licensing mark for wool products. To use the logo, a manufacturer must hold a licence and the products carrying it must meet Woolmark’s wool content and performance standards.

What does the licence verify?

The licence indicates that products supplied within its scope meet the relevant Woolmark standards for wool content and performance. The logo therefore identifies products assessed against those requirements.

The scope is product-specific

A Woolmark licence does not automatically cover everything a manufacturer makes. It applies to the products included within its scope. When reviewing a quotation, check whether the licence covers the carpet being offered, rather than simply whether the manufacturer holds a licence.

What does it not cover?

Reaction-to-fire classification, acoustic performance, patterns and prayer row layouts are outside the scope of the Woolmark licence. These characteristics are assessed separately through relevant tests and documentation. For example, reaction-to-fire classification is determined under EN 13501-1, while acoustic values are documented in the appropriate measurement reports. Woolmark should therefore be assessed alongside other product information.

Woolmark and other documentation at Kalida

Kalida holds Woolmark licence number 30000990. A Wools of New Zealand licence, WNZ260001, also applies to the relevant wool options. Our mosque carpets are CE-marked, and our quality, environmental, and occupational health and safety management systems are certified by DQS. We provide information on the licences and documentation applicable to the specific product being offered.

Comparing quotations

Consider Woolmark information alongside the carpet’s other characteristics. Ask for written confirmation of licence coverage, wool type and blend percentages. Request separate test reports for reaction to fire, acoustics and durability.

A Woolmark licence provides product-specific information about compliance with Woolmark’s wool content and performance standards. It does not document every technical characteristic of a carpet, but contributes useful evidence when reviewed alongside other tests and documentation.
